A ferocious conflict of wills...

Vere Mallory, the Duke of Ainswood, has everything--he's titled, he's rich, he's devastatingly good looking--and he seems determined to throw it all away. Disreputable, reckless, and wild, the last of the Mallory hellions is racing headlong to self-destruction...until a mind numbingly beautiful blonde knocks him off his feet--literally.

An incendiary passion...

Lydia Grenville is dedicated to protecting London's downtrodden. Dissolute noblemen like Ainswood are part of the problem, not the solution. She would like him to get his big, gorgeous carcass out of her way so that she can carry on with her work. The problem is, Ainswood can no more resist a challenge, especially in female form, than he can resist the trouble she seems to attract.

If they can only weather their personal firestorm...
they might survive the real danger that threatens all they hold dear.

"THE LAST HELLION is the follow-up to Loretta Chase's award-winning and beloved "Lord of Scoundrels" and while that particular book may be her most popular, for me personally "The Last Hellion" is my all-time favorite of hers. I originally read this book about six-years ago and have re-read it every couple of years since. It was excellently written with an engaging dialogue, and then there was Vere, who is the epitome of the term hero and whom I absolutely adored!

Vere was just too wonderful for words and I loved everything about him. Lydia was his perfect counterpart and I just thought these two were made for each other. Their bantering is hilarious and their love was simply beautiful. I smiled, laughed, and even cried while reading their extraordinary love story. These are two intelligent, kind, strong, and funny people. My heart was moved and my emotions were engaged the entire length of this lovely and heartwarming novel.

This story was perfectly written in my opinion, with truly unforgettable characters, and a great, entertaining and fun plot. I really cannot recommend this author or book highly enough. It is one of the best romances I've ever read, probably ever will, and one I will continue to read again and again. It's just such an utterly romantic and touching tale about soul mates and true love. Deeply moving and memorable, this love story will stick with you long after you finish it =)

  • What a great story this is! A woman helping unfortunate women meets a wild gentleman in the slums of London, and knocks him into the mud when he tries to interrupt her rescue of a young girl being lured into a brothel. Their adversarial relationship morphs into a mutual aid pact as he begins to assist her with her work. He is a newly minted lord, despondent because of the death of both the previous lord(his cousin) and the cousin's young son. He falls in love with the heroine do-gooder as he begins to appreciate her directness, her bravery, and her practical kindness. Mysteries are also solved concerning her family. Members of his family are brought together as he once again is able to love them after his depression ceases. Just a delight to read and has witty dialogue.
  • Quite fun.

I can't grasp the appeal to the heroine of a blowhard sleaze like Mallory, as he comes off as in the start (he's revealed from the beginning to have a basis for sympathy, though only to the reader), but the characters and their dialogue and interplay are pretty entertaining (and the hero's character improves). Lydia is a seriously tough dame, in a believably near-modern model (or at least more so, I feel, than some of Chase's other indomitable Regency-ish era heroines).

I appreciate a story that can make me laugh, even as it's focus is something else. And quite a lot of happenings manage to get packed into one novel - these characters are not particularly meandering, introspective types.

Bertie Trent, first introduced in Lord of Scandal (also readable) gets a decent role and a happy ending.
Beaumont, a villain who lurks in at least 3 of the novels in this series, shows up to muck up some more lives indirectly.
And, if you read and liked Lord of Scandal, you might enjoy the slice of cameo for Beelzebub (and Jess, though she doesn't get too many lines).
Mallory gets a whole whomp of baggage, up front, and sorts it out while pursuing Lydia at a breakneck pace (once very nearly literally).
Lydia, meanwhile, is busy with her job, helping recover stolen goods, trying to end the reign of a particularly nasty peddler of child prostitutes, and a secret writing project.
The tale barrels along and it's a fun ride.
